P8 Vocabulary for Feb-March 4, 2011

Classroom definitions
1. Ostentatious-(adj.) characterized by or given to pretentious or
conspicuous show in an attempt to impress others

2. Belligerent-(adj.) warlike, hostile, or pugnacious

3. Affluent-(adj.) rich, abundant

4. Paradigm-(n.) example, model, pattern

5. Eulogy-(n.) death speech; spoken or written praise of a person
especially of someone who has died

6. Idolatry-(n.) worship of idols; excessive admiration

7. Accrue-(v.) to accumulate



Her credit cards accrue interest even when she paid off double the minimum balances due, twice a month.

8. Pseudonym-(n)false name used by a writer

9. Acquaintance-(n.) person one knows casually




10. Compliant-(adj.)obeying, obliging, or yielding in a submissive way


Many are in compliance with school policies. 

I will add exact pages, and Words in Context, as Kayla mentioned to illustrate words' use in different forms.

Ex: The American went to Paris to live for three years. = NOUN

As the American soldiers stormed the French coast, the enemies ran to their battle stations. ADJ.

In the first sentence American is a NOUN, while in the second one, American and French have been changed to ADJECTIVES, since they now modify or enhance the nouns, "soldiers" and "coast".
